Transloadit

Transloadit is the file encoding and processing API Tim Koschützki bootstrapped from Hamburg, Germany in 2009. It provides a reliable, scalable API for encoding videos (convert MP4 to HLS, generate thumbnails), processing images (resize, compress, watermark, generate thumbnails), extracting audio from video, transcribing audio, and dozens of other media processing tasks — all configured via simple JSON "Assembly instructions" that describe the processing pipeline. The company grew to $3M+ ARR with 20+ employees serving 50,000+ developers. Transloadit's key insight was that file processing workflows are complex (video → extract audio → transcribe → generate subtitles → burn subtitles into video) and building that pipeline reliably with retries, failure handling, and scalability is hard. Transloadit handles all of it with a JSON configuration, freeing developers to focus on their application logic. The Companion open-source library (a Node.js server that handles remote file imports from Google Drive, Dropbox, Instagram, and URL) and the Uppy JavaScript file uploader (500,000+ weekly npm downloads) created a massive open-source ecosystem that drives commercial adoption.
