Hotjar
PREMIUMHeatmaps, recordings, and surveys to understand user behavior.
Five co-founders launched Hotjar in Malta in 2014 with a bet that behavioral analytics shouldn't cost enterprise money. They combined heatmaps, session recordings, conversion funnels, and user surveys into a single affordable tool and launched with a freemium model. Within 6 months they had 20,000+ sign-ups. The product spread virally — agencies and freelancers used it on client sites and recommended it everywhere. Hotjar was fully bootstrapped and profitable since early on, never taking a dollar of venture capital. By 2020 it was installed on over 1 million websites in 180+ countries with $27M in annual revenue. The team was fully remote before remote work was trendy. Contentsquare acquired Hotjar in 2021, making it one of the biggest bootstrapped exits in the analytics space. The founders distributed the proceeds among the entire team. Hotjar proved you could build a mainstream SaaS product with millions of users on pure bootstrapping, without growth hacking, without VC money, and without compromising the product.
