NordVPN is the consumer VPN service operated by Nord Security, bootstrapped from Vilnius, Lithuania by Tom Okman and Eimantas Sabaliauskas. Starting in 2012 from a small team with no outside funding, NordVPN grew to over 14 million users and $200M+ ARR by building a brand that competed against dozens of well-funded rivals purely through aggressive affiliate marketing and a product that genuinely outperformed competitors on speed and server count. NordVPN's growth was driven by a massive affiliate and influencer program — paying YouTube creators, tech bloggers, and podcast hosts a commission for every subscriber they referred. This paid performance marketing model cost nothing upfront and scaled directly with revenue. The company expanded into a full security suite with NordPass (password manager), NordLocker (encrypted storage), and NordLayer (business VPN), all cross-sold to the existing 14M+ user base. Nord Security remained fully bootstrapped and profitable throughout its entire history.
