CleanShot X was built by a small Polish team (MTW) who were tired of the limitations of macOS's built-in screenshot tools. The app offers 50+ features: annotate, redact, record video, create GIFs, blur sensitive content, upload to cloud, and more — all from a single native Mac app with a slick design. The team launched with a one-time purchase model ($29), making it accessible and low-friction. It spread virally through developer and designer communities, shared constantly on Twitter and in newsletters. CleanShot X became the default screenshot tool for a huge portion of the Mac power-user market, consistently recommended as the first app to install on a new Mac. It's available as a standalone purchase or through Setapp. The combination of native macOS performance, constant updates, and a fair one-time price made it a case study in how to succeed in a space where Apple's free tool exists. Revenue estimated at $15k+/month from direct sales and Setapp licensing.
