Chris Coyier, Alex Vazquez, and Tim Sabat launched CodePen in 2012. Chris was already famous as the creator of CSS-Tricks, one of the most popular web development blogs. CodePen let developers write HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a browser and see the result live — a "pen" — and share it instantly. The social layer was key: pens were public by default, and a Picks feed curated beautiful demos that attracted millions of developers who came to browse, learn, and be inspired. CodePen became the place where CSS tricks, JavaScript experiments, and UI demos were shared and discovered. The business model was CodePen Pro — private pens, collaboration, live view, and professor mode for teaching. Revenue grew steadily from the massive developer user base. CodePen remained independent and bootstrapped by a team of three for years, becoming one of the most-visited developer tools on the internet with tens of millions of monthly users.
