Timing

Timing is the automatic time tracking Mac application Daniel Alm bootstrapped from Zurich, Switzerland starting in 2015. Unlike Toggl or Harvest where you manually start and stop timers, Timing runs silently in the background, automatically recording every application you use, every website you visit, and every document you work on — then lets you review and categorize your activity at the end of the day. The company grew to $1M+ ARR as a one-person operation. Timing's approach reflects a common reality: most people forget to start timers, leading to inaccurate timesheets. By recording everything automatically and letting you classify it later ("yes, that 45 minutes in Figma counts toward the Client X project"), Timing produces accurate time records with minimal effort. The Mac-only focus — using deep macOS APIs like Accessibility API, AppleScript, and NSWorkspace to capture application context — delivered a product quality impossible to replicate with cross-platform frameworks. Timing became the favorite tool of freelancers and consultants who need accurate hourly billing records but resent the discipline of manual time tracking.
