Readwise
Resurface your best reading highlights so you actually remember what you read.
Daniel Doyon and Tristan Homsi launched Readwise in 2018 after being frustrated that they'd read hundreds of books with Kindle highlights they never looked at again. The insight: reading without review is mostly forgetting. Readwise syncs all your Kindle, iBooks, Instapaper, Pocket, and web highlights, then sends you a daily email with five highlights using spaced repetition. They charged $7.99/month from day one, targeting the small but passionate segment of serious non-fiction readers. Growth came through word-of-mouth from obsessive readers who recommended it endlessly. They wrote a detailed blog post explaining why they chose to bootstrap rather than raise VC — the market wasn't big enough for a billion-dollar outcome, but it was plenty big enough for a profitable indie business. They later launched Readwise Reader, a full-featured read-later app. The company stays intentionally small, prioritizes user happiness over growth, and has remained bootstrapped and profitable.
