Ploi

Dennis Smink launched Ploi in the Netherlands in 2018 as a cheaper, cleaner alternative to Laravel Forge for server provisioning and management. Where Forge was the established market leader for PHP developers deploying to cloud servers, Ploi offered a more affordable entry point with a modern UI and support for multiple PHP frameworks, Node.js, and databases. Dennis built it as a solo developer, targeting freelancers and small agencies who wanted Forge-like functionality at a lower price. He launched quietly, built a solid feature set, and grew through word-of-mouth in the Laravel and PHP communities. Ploi added support for one-click deploys, SSL certificates, cron jobs, and database management. Revenue grew steadily to ~$20k/month from a base of thousands of paying developers. Dennis ran the company largely solo for years, occasionally bringing in contractors. A perfect example of a "take market share by undercutting on price and simplicity" strategy in an established developer tool category.
