Help Scout
Customer support software that feels like email, not a ticket system.
Help Scout is the customer support platform Nick Francis, Denny Shaskin, and Jared McDaniel built to make support feel less like a ticket queue and more like a genuine conversation. Founded in Boston in 2011, Help Scout hides the ticketing interface from customers entirely — they just receive a normal email reply. The product includes a shared inbox, live chat (Beacon widget), a help center builder, and in-app messaging, all from one dashboard with no visible ticket numbers or case IDs. Help Scout grew by targeting companies that care deeply about customer experience and want to differentiate on service quality. The company bootstrapped to profitability before raising outside capital, and built a reputation for thoughtful product decisions — they wrote extensively about customer service philosophy, which attracted exactly the customers they wanted. The Beacon widget (a help center + chat bubble) became a viral distribution channel: every customer website shows "Powered by Help Scout," generating thousands of signups.
