Peldi Guilizzoni was a senior engineer at Adobe when he noticed a gap: wireframing tools were either too complex or too primitive. He quit in 2008 and built the first version of Balsamiq Mockups in three months while living off savings. The breakthrough was a deliberate design choice — intentionally sketchy, hand-drawn aesthetics that made mockups obviously unfinished, keeping conversations focused on functionality instead of polish. He launched with a single blog post, got picked up by Lifehacker, and made his first $5,000 in two weeks. Within 18 months he had crossed $2M in revenue entirely through word of mouth. Balsamiq became the poster child of bootstrapped SaaS, celebrated by 37signals as the canonical example of "bootstrapped, profitable, and proud." Peldi famously turned down acquisition offers including from Adobe, his former employer. Today Balsamiq generates over $6M annually with a fully remote team of 30+ people and has never taken a dollar of outside investment.
